The short answer: do not restart the entire syllabus when maths feels difficult. Use a short diagnostic, identify the earlier skill behind the mistake, practise it in a small set, then return to the current topic and test whether the improvement transfers.
Signs of a foundation gap
A student may understand the new explanation but repeatedly stumble over fractions, signs, order of operations or the wording of a problem. When the same type of error appears across different units, an earlier prerequisite is usually involved.
A 20-minute diagnostic
Select ten questions covering essential operations and prerequisites for the current unit. Work without help, then classify each error: interpreting the task, choosing a rule, carrying out the calculation or checking the result. Look for the repeated category.
Repair one skill at a time
- Watch or read a concise explanation of the named skill.
- Complete two examples slowly, stating the reason for every step.
- Answer five graduated questions without support.
- Correct immediately and record the cause of each error.
- Use the skill inside one question from the current lesson.
Keep the gap from returning
Repeat two questions after three days and again after a week. Mix them with other problem types so that you must select the method. Explain the solution aloud; verbal explanation often reveals jumps that a written answer hides.
How parents can support progress
Discuss the type of mistake instead of labelling the student “bad at maths”. Notice measurable gains in a small skill, such as handling negative signs accurately. If the obstacle remains after consistent targeted practice, ask the teacher for a deeper diagnostic.
